The Limits of Hope

Throw your name out in the dark
And watch it stumble alone,
A lover without a home
A player without a goal.
Cross the line as if it was
A crumbling wall to test
The limits of hope
Falling like dust to the ground.

Throw all your dreams right out the door
Expect them to beg in the street,
But see them pick themselves up off the pavement
They’ve got their own life it seems.
Banish the pain and cripple the fear
The Gordian knot does tie,
Honour is war for those who have fought,
Pretenders will rise and fall.

If the sun could distinguish a path
Would following be enough?
If all loose ends were tied
Would I still have to build a shrine?

Break out the wine and celebrate
How far you can push yourself,
Limits of endurance are no threat here
They break like twigs in the wind.
Flatter the facts and forget the past
Read the article with pride,
And remember to drown in your glass
Because the glass is what keeps you alive.

If I could remember a time
When love was not so blind,
I’m sure I could live with the hope
That this love would keep me alive.

Fall on your knees like they were your heart
A trick you pulled out of your sleeve,
And don’t forget to ignore what you hear
Words - they all burn for free.
Joke with the ghost and fake all your tears
And keep all your feelings inside,
The limits of hope,
Flicker like candles in your mind.

See them flicker like candles in your mind.
