Forest for the Trees

There was a robber standing outside my window
Looking in to see me in tears,
I had just given all I owned to charity
To spite my selfish greed.

Born as a thief,
Take all I need
And smother the rest in greed

There he became the only witness to
The drunken stupor of a mind in turmoil:
“What to do, what to do, what to do with myself
If all I love has gone to someone else?”

Born as a thief,
Take all I need
And smother the rest in greed

Sworn to deceive
Fake until I bleed
And smother the rest in greed.

(Solo)

And then just as he was about to turn and go
He leaned in and he said,
“Well you can look at it this way if you like
At least you won’t be a victim to theft.”
“Oh” I said, “I have been a victim all along
For the crime of coveting all I owned,
You see I took my love and I kept it locked away
Surrounded by possessions and thinking it was safe.”

Born as a thief
Take all I need
And smother the rest in greed

Sworn to deceive
How could I not see,
The forest for the trees?

Sworn to deceive
How could I not see,
The forest for the trees?
