Black Pool

“There’s a loser in the house,
And a puppet on a stool,
And a crowded way of life
      And a black reflecting pool.”
        - Greg Graffin

When I said
You should keep the child in your heart,
I didn’t mean
You should always act the part.

When I said
You should look before you jump,
I didn’t mean
You should aim to destroy my fun.

When you look in the mirror
Do you see, a black pool staring back at you?

When you said
“Your life is in my hands,”
I didn’t realise
It balanced on the blade of a knife.

And now I wonder, if I can
Take this fractured heart and pretend
That someday it just might beat again.

And now I wonder, if I can
Take this ruptured lung and start again,
Hold my breath and just pretend
That I’m swimming in the shallow end.

This song was written while living in a converted double garage near Highland Park, Auckland. I'm pretty confident that the guitar tuning is open G, but I could be wrong.
