Around My Head

I curse the spaces between us
To think I never learnt more,
It was a gulf a couldn't cross,
If I had too much I still wanted more.

And all the dreams that never stopped
     Circling around my head.

I curse the sun for being bright
And giving you such a beautiful life,
I curse the night for being cold
And leaving me with no one to hold.

And all these wishes that never stopped
     Dreaming of being fulfilled,
And if I held you in my arms
     Would I still feel lost?

So take your smile away
And let someone else share your day,
I won't be cursing you
If I knew how to give I'd give too.
And though I watched from miles away
I never wanted to see you go,
Cause when you looked at me and waved
I felt my world spin slow.

And all the dreams have never stopped
     Spinning around my head.

  • 2000; Highland Park, Auckland

From late 1998 through to early 2001 I worked in a bookshop in the Highland Park mall which was connected to the supermarket next door.

I met one one the most beautiful souls in my life who worked on the checkout counter while I slummed my way through being a sales assistant and assistant book-buyer. I was also in the midst of the worst depression my in my life and was only months or so away from a full mental breakdown.

Although the subject of the song already had someone in her life, she welcomed me as a new presence and accepted my friendship, and so I was able to accept her friendship in return.

The chords are interesting, and the whole musical idea is that the chord cycle repeats itself, but then has an added moment during the chorus.
